When you start off on a diet it is important to understand what you can eat and what you can’t eat, otherwise, it really isn’t a diet. The same thing applies to the ketogenic diet.
There are certain foods that you can not eat if you wish to stay in a state of ketosis.
The purpose of this post is to talk about the different foods that you should avoid on keto because if you aren’t prepared you can easily mess up and knock your body out of ketosis.
Foods to Avoid on Keto
One of the interesting things about keto is that a lot of your cravings being to disappear. When you see the foods that you can’t eat your first thought might be “there is no way I’m going to be able to give up that.”
However, once you’re in ketosis you understand that many of the things you craved were simply caused by the carbohydrates within them. This is why in our weight loss manual we start people off with a carb detox so they can see the benefits of no longer craving carbs.
Another blessing of being in the age of the Internet is that 1000s of people have shared different substitutes for the foods they enjoy.
If you are hoping to find some substitutes for the foods that you can’t eat below then check out our post on low-carb substitutes.
Grains and Starches
Let’s face it, bread is a big deal. A lof people eat bread every single day in some form.
It’s very convenient to be able to run down to Subway and pick up a sandwich. Bread goes with every meal so when people hear that they have to give it up for keto they turn their back and try to find another diet.
But grains cause your body problems. You know that gluten-free foods have become a big deal and the reason why is because grain can causes allergies and other issues internally. When you cut out grains you also cut out a ton of carbs that your body likes to convert into glucose and then fat.
Below are carb loaded foods that need to stay out of your keto diet:
There is no need to fret, though. Keto people are innovative and if they want bread, they are going to get bread in some fashion. For example, we made these keto bagels just the other day for our breakfast sandwiches and they turned out fantastic.
You can make all sorts of bread on keto that work just as well as traditional bread.
Need rice? You can make cauliflower rice. In the keto world, when there’s a will, there’s a way.
A lot of diets will advise you to avoid alcohols. On keto, because you’re concerned about your carb intake, you just have to worry about the carbs in the drinks you consume.
That means the following are usually off limits:
That doesn’t mean you need to stay away from liquor though. Most liquors are pretty keto safe because they don’t contain many carbs or carbs at all. What usually gets people when trying to do the keto diet are the mixers that go with these alcohols.
Here are the different liquors that we enjoy and still stay in ketosis:
Some of them we drink straight up, but others require something. A vodka soda works well but what if you want some flavor? No problem, you can some MiO with you and you have almost any type of flavored drink you want without the sugar.
If you find yourself in a situation where you do have a drink or two that could knock you out of ketosis just try to limit the amount.
Candy and fruit are two of my most favorite things in the world so when I saw that I couldn’t have them on keto I was heartbroken.
In all honesty, I didn’t know how I was going to survive without them considering that I have such strong cravings towards them.
But all was not lost! When I discovered fat bombs my life was made whole again. They help me when I have to reach my fat macros but also provide me with some sweet sweet relief.
You must be careful with them though because if you’re prone to sugar cravings they can easily put you back into a vicious cycle.
Here is what you should absolutely avoid when it comes to sugar:
- Fruit Juices
- Ice Cream
If you’re a fruit junkie you can still eat berries but you have to watch your consumption. We love to indulge in some raspberries and blueberries from time to time.
Note that when you’re body goes into ketosis your sugar cravings disappear for the most part so things become a lot easier to resist.
There’s Still More
Because it’s important to monitor your carb intake, a lot of vegetables are off the menu. Many people don’t realize that some vegetables have pretty high levels of carbohydrates that end up knocking them out of ketosis so for that reason it’s important to understand what you can eat on the ketogenic diet.
